I hope you are all starting to see the new shoots emerging from the ground as we move towards Spring. Nights are lighter for longer and you may feel that you are coming out of your winter hibernation! It is important and beneficial to us to take notice of these things and how they make you feel. Hopefully these new shoots will imbue you with a sense of positivity and possibility.
As the world reels from pandemic to conflict it is so important that we can deal with these events and remain resilient, just like the bulbs survive the frosts and cold and still emerge unscathed by this. Yoga provides the space, physically and mentally for us to leave our worries behind and concentrate on ourselves. My hope is that you leave classes feeling taller and stronger within yourselves. If you do find your stress and anxiety levels rising, a couple of things that you can try are:
Sit or lie somewhere quiet and comfortable, if possible. Inhale, pause, then inhale again. Exhale in one go. Repeat this 7- 10 times. The extended inhale and exhale automatically switches on our parasympathetic nervous system which tells our bodies to relax.
Bring the fingertips of the thumb and index finger together and press lightly, then the thumb and middle finger and so on. When you reach the little finger reverse the order back to thumb and index. Count as you touch each one, counting up to 23. If you lose count, start again.
For this half term the main focus with be strengthening our bodies and minds.
